A Beginner's Guide to Making Your Own Natural Beeswax Candles

Hey there, fellow crafters! Got a cozy weekend lined up, or maybe it’s a rainy afternoon calling for a fun project? We’ve got the perfect idea that'll fill your home with the most beautiful, subtle honey scent as you work: making your own beeswax candles!

We're all about that sweet life here at the hive! That's why we're so excited to talk about one of the most incredible gifts our bees give us—pure beeswax.  And nothing beats the pure, clean burn of a natural beeswax candle. They’re great for your home, fantastic as gifts, and honestly, making them is a simple pleasure.

Ready to dive in? Let's get your craft on!

What You'll Need (Keep It Simple!)

Making your first batch of DIY beeswax candles is surprisingly easy, so no need for fancy words or complicated steps here!

  • Pure British Beeswax Pellets: These are the hero of the hour! Pellets are way easier to measure and melt than big blocks, trust us.
  • Wicks: Natural cotton wicks work best for a clean burn. Make sure they're the right size for your container.
  • Containers: Small jars, mason jars, or even teacups—anything heatproof works!
  • A Double Boiler: This is key for melting the wax gently. You can use a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water.
  • Stirring Stick: A wooden skewer or spoon you don't mind getting waxy.
  • Clothes Pegs or Wick Bar: These help hold your wick in place.

The Buzzing Simple Steps (How to make beeswax candles)

Looking for a fun project to sweeten up your day? and the subtle, sweet aroma that fills your kitchen while the wax melts is an absolute treat.

  1. Prep Your Jars: Secure one end of your wick to the bottom of the jar (a little melted wax or a dab of glue works). Then, clip the other end of the wick to a clothes peg and rest the peg across the top of the jar's opening. This keeps the wick straight and centered.
  2. Melt the Wax: Pour your beeswax pellets into the top of your double boiler. Keep the heat on low to medium and stir occasionally until the wax is completely liquid. Remember: Patience is key! Beeswax melts slowly, but it's worth it for the beautiful result.
  3. Pour the Sweetness: Once the wax is fully melted, carefully pour it into your prepared jars. Don't rush! Fill them up, leaving a little space at the top.
  4. Wait and Watch: Now for the hardest part—waiting! Let your candles cool completely, which can take a few hours. We recommend leaving them overnight. You'll see the wax turn from clear golden liquid into a beautiful, solid, natural colour.
  5. Trim and Enjoy: Once solid, remove the clothes peg and trim the wick down to about 1/4 inch. That's it! Your natural, clean-burning DIY beeswax candles are ready to light up your life.

Why Beeswax is the Best

Why do we love pure, natural beeswax for candles? It's all about that premium quality and pure goodness.

  • Clean Burn: Unlike paraffin, natural beeswax is non-toxic and hypo-allergenic, offering one of the cleanest burns you can get.
  • Longer Lasting: Beeswax burns slower and hotter than other waxes, so your gorgeous candles will stick around for longer!
  • Natural Aroma: You don't need to add any synthetic scents; the wax naturally holds the sweet, subtle scent of honey from the hive. It's truly a delight!
